Electronic Resumes

A lot can be lost in electronic translation.

 

Create different copies of your resume.  In addition to the hard copy that you will format and send, create a copy of your resume to be sent by email, one to to be posted in HTML and one to be scanned.
Your hard copy version can probably be send as an attachment in a PDF format, in a Word format or in Word Perfect, but  before you send an attachment, ask for permission and for the preferred word processing program.
Eventually you will probably face an electronic conversion - either attachments will not be acceptable, your resume is going to be scanned or you are going to post online.
If you need to include a resume can be within the body of the message, do so by creating plain text document (ASCII).  You will not be able to bold, underlining, bullets, distinctive fonts, or graphics in ASCII format.  You can use combinations of  *, -, +, and all capital lettering for emphasis.  Limit lines to 60 characters.  Always send a copy to yourself and/or a friend to check it out before you send it.
If you know that your resume is going to be scanned (most hard copies are now scanned), create a version of your resume that will still look good after scanning.  Keep in mind that color, italics, underlining and columns will be lost in scanning. Practice until you get a look you like.
If you are going to post an HTML version of your resume use templates whenever they are provided by a bulletin board.  Remember that different browsers will make your resume look different. Always check you resume on different browsers and different computers to make sure it looks good. Remember that different size monitors will make your resume look different - check your resume on different sized monitors.  A good rule of thumb is limit the width or your resume so that it still looks good on small monitors and split screens; one way to do that is to embed your resume inside a borderless table with a table width of no more than 600 pixels
