John Graham's Music Files

The following downloadable mp3 files are a sample of things I've either recorded in my home studio, my brother Robert's studio, or years ago with Wydsyth.  Enjoy.  For CD-quality (44.1 kHz, 16 bit) wav files of these and other projects, write me at jgraham@berry.edu.

Butterfingers (J. H. Graham)   mp3  I met free-jazz guitarist Sonny Sharrock in 1967 at the Barn Arts Center, in Delran, New Jersey.  At the time, he was playing with jazz saxophonist Byard Lancaster.  This one is dedicated to Sonny.

Attractor (J. H. Graham)  mp3 Rickenbacker electric 12-string, Danelectro Longhorn Bass, and Moroccan drums.  This piece is most obviously influenced by Hungarian jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo and 12-string guitarist Roger McGuinn of the Byrds.  I used to perform this with the South Jersey rock band Wydsyth, back in 1970.

Mary Lou 14 South Philly (J. H. Graham)     mp3  Homage to Steve Reich.  Vocal sample of my wife (Cathy), with loops and processing.

ML14SF (variation on a theme; J. H. Graham)    mp3  Just a brief vocal sample of Cathy, looped, stretched, inverted, and transposed.  Everything that sounds like distorted guitar is actually processed vocals.  The rhythm was generated with a frequency modulated oscillator.

On the Black (Robert Graham)    mp3  My brother Robert (Tomato Sudios, Delran, NJ) of the Haiku Riders plays acoustic guitar, bass, and percussion here.  He also does the vocals.  I'm on electric guitar (Epiphone Sheraton through a Univox Superfuzz into a 1965 Ampeg Jet).  According to Rob, this song is "about car racing.  Black is a small reference to the late Dale Earnhardt, killed during a crash at Daytona Speedway."

Young Catherine (Turlough O'Carolan)    mp3    This is my favorite composition by Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738).  Solo classical guitar.

Hag With the Money (Irish Traditional)     mp3    This is from O'Neill's Music of Ireland.  Classical guitar, with electric bass.

Blooming (J. H. Graham)    mp3  Improvisation in A minor, with added percussion.  Gibson Gospel.

Eight Miles High (Clark, McGuinn, Crosby)     mp3    This is the instrumental meltdown at the end of Wydsyth's cover of Eight Miles High, first recorded in 1965 and 1966 by the Byrds.  Our cover was recorded by a neighbor in either 1968 or '69 on an inexpensive 2-track recorder--a field recording of a New Jersey garage band.  Given the volume we played at, the cheap mics, and the age of the tapes, the sound is understandably raw.  Wydsyth was Robert "Buzz" Buzynski (vocals), Mike Governa (drums), John Graham (lead guitar), Fred Missimer (rhythm guitar, vocals), Dan Smurlo (organ and accordion), and Mark Wannop (bass).  I'm playing a Hagstrom III (my first real guitar) through a 100 watt Silvertone Twin.  Fred is playing a Gibson Explorer.

Recorded at Possum Trot Studios, Mount Berry, Georgia., except On the Black, which was partly recorded at Tomato Studios, Delran, New Jersey.  John Graham: acoustic and electric guitars, 12-string electric guitar, electric bass, bodhran, and assorted percussion.
