Writing assignment:
You will write a 4 page essay on differences between American and Chinese cultures. You may choose from the two topics below. The topic will not be your thesis. The analytical thesis statement must be more specific in how the essay will address the topic.
1) Choose as a topic some aspect of culture that differs in the U.S. and China. Use your essay to explain how it is different and how it is similar, and give examples to prove your argument.
2) Choose something about Chinese culture to write about that is different from American culture and discuss why it is different. Focus on the Chinese aspect of culture, including cause/effect reasoning.
You should use quotes from Salzman in your paper. The quotes should come from the book Iron and Silk. We will discuss citation format in class.
Schedule for writing process:
8/30: Invention in groups in class
9/1: Homework (we will work on these in class; does not have to be typed)
a thesis statement
9/6: Homework (typed, please)
one paragraph that you might use in your essay
9/8: Complete first draft of essay due (minimum 4 pages, typed, double-spaced)
9/13: Essay 1 due
