| This past weekend we were at the Casa Matapalo with the 12 students in the scholarship program here. Here is a quick video with everyone hanging out after visiting Guaitil and Santa Cruz. Next weekend is freetime for the Berry students. | |||||

| Here are some photographs from this past weekend. We had a great weekend of fun and fellowship. These photos tell the story of a couple of weekends that we have at Hacienda Pinilla. Most of the time here our sleeves are rolled up, and we are working in the schools or elsewhere. There will be more photos from the field soon. | |||||

| The course on Costa Rican culture meets once a week for a few hours at the primary school in San José de Pinilla (the town where Teresa and Shannon are living). Six of the students meet on Wednesday and the other six on Thursday. After a pretty intense first week, everyone was happy to be together. Here is a video that Rachel shot while we were in Santa Cruz, taking the students home after class. They were a bit giddy to be together. | |||||

| Here are a few photos from our first week. It's been a full week, so photography has not been a priority. There will be more and better photos to come. | |||||

We have been in Costa Rica for a week now. What a packed time this has been! For the students, this has been a week of major adjustment. Ten of them are working in the schools, one in the medical clinic and one with the Hacienda. As I have traveled around to see all of the students, most of them great me with smiles and somewhat stunned looks on their faces. Each student is working through her own challenges this week: the heat, the language, a different culture, different working conditions, bugs, unpredictable schedules, etc. They are doing great even though they are being pushed beyond some limits they thought they had. Those of you invested in this program in any way should be proud. I knew we had a great group of students as we all got to know each other this past semester. However, there is nothing that will allow you to get to know someone like traveling and toiling together in a different country. It has been a joy to work with these Berry students this first week, and I expect nothing but the same for the six weeks ahead. As Yanith Ruiz, the executive director of the Fundación put it, "Berry es un nido de talento" ("Berry is a nest of talent"). I couldn't agree more. We are happy to be winding down this first difficult week of surprises and new experiences. In some aspects, living here in Costa Rica will be much easier for the students as each week passes, but the work is never easy. A joy, yes. Easy, who would want that? I will be uploading photos from the week very soon! |

| In two days we'll be leaving for Guanacaste. It has been a full year of preparations. We are about as ready as we can be at this point. There is a world of change ahead for us as we aclimate to the heat, 24/7 Spanish, serving, having our lives stretched, etc. It's going to be great, and I could ask for a better team than the one we have assembled for this year's program. We have ten teachers/tutors, one person working with the medical clinic and one interning with the horticultural/environmental unit. Except for the fatigue from finishing up the spring semester, we are ready to be there! This is a photo of LIR, Guanacaste Int'l Airport, in Liberia. |
