Summer 2008 Tutoring Program in Guanacaste

The Fundación Progreso Guanacaste is a non-profit organization that serves as a bi-cultural bridge to offer community empowerment through better housing for those in need, integrated health services and accessibility to better quality education and educational infrastructure.

As a part of this mission, the Fundación sponsors a program for Berry College students to teach English for seven weeks in the Guanacaste region. This program, which takes place from May 12 to June 28, 2008, is designed to provide Costa Rican teachers assistance with their classes. The participating Berry students will assist kindergarten and first grade teachers teachers. Some of the Berry students are taking a course taught by the co-director of the program, David Slade. Dean Jackie McDowell, the program’s other co-director, has designed the curriculum for this summer’s program and has led the training effort for the Berry students as well as local principals and teachers. She has almost a decade of experience in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica.
